Atlantic Records has announced the success of Wiz Khalifa’s nationwide “Waken Baken Tour.” The tour, which kicked off on September 16th in Philadelphia, was this Fall’s hottest ticket with most shows selling out within hours of going on sale. Most notably, an additional date had to be added at Los Angeles’ The Music Box, due to the great demand for Wiz’s live show. The “Waken Baken Tour,” which will wrap on November 21st in Boston, to yet another sold out crowd, has exceeded 80,000 tickets sold.
During the tour, Khalifa found fans in some of the hottest names in Hip-Hop, bringing music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs out on stage in Hollywood, Juicy J of the rap trio Three Six Mafia in Las Vegas, while R&B star Chris Brown joined the “Taylor Gang General” at his show in Houston, TX. As if all this weren’t enough, Khalifa is also the first artist to sell out the Stage AE in his hometown of Pittsburgh, PA in mid-December, which led to an additional show at the venue.
The rapper, who beat Nicki Minaj and J.Cole this past summer to be crowned MTV’s “Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010,” has much to celebrate thanks to the success of his breakthrough single “Black & Yellow,” which was the number 1 most added song on Urban radio this week. The smash single, produced by Stargate, is currently number 2 on iTunes’ “Hip-Hop/R&B Charts” pulling ahead of labelmate B.o.B and rap veteran Kanye West. The track — an ode to Khalifa’s hometown colors — has also peaked at number 1 on Billboard’s “Heatseekers Chart.” Billboard also dubbed “Black & Yellow” a “Hot Football Fight Song,” because of its popularity during Pittsburgh Steelers games.

Wiz Khalifa (with opener Big K.R.I.T) was at the 9:30 Club last night, for the D.C. stop of his sold-out Waken Baken tour.
The Pittsburgh rapper, who recently signed to Atlantic Records, seems to touch people with his enthusiasm for his hometown sports teams, weed, full-body tattoo art, and Chuck Taylors. And while he revisits the same themes over and over and over again, his rhymes are varied and unique. Last night’s early set at 9:30 club streamed live on Khalifa’s website, so he asked his fans, the Taylor Gang, as he calls them as a group, to get “extra crazy,” but it was a completely unnecessary request.
The Waken Baken posters taped up around the venue were quickly pulled down by Wiz fans who wanted a souvenir.
Funniest track title: “Smoker Face,” which, of course, uses Lady Gagas “Poker Face.”
Because the crowd was so young, appearing to fall mostly within the 18-20 range, the bar was not as busy as it usually is during sold-out shows, but there was a huge run on the free iced water.
Everything Khalifa performed from the Kush and Orange Juice mixtapesounded hazy and beautiful, particularly “Mezmorized.” and “Up.”
