Wiz Khalifa Says ‘Roll Up’ Is ‘For Guys To Sing To Chicks’

Oh, that Wiz Khalifa is so clever.

The “Black and Yellow” star followed up his breakout single, which reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, with “Roll Up.”

When he spoke to MTV News late last year, he teased the song as a nod to his favorite pastime — his album is called Rolling Papers, after all. “The next single is called ‘Roll Up,’ surprisingly,” he coyly explained with a laugh.

The song, however, is anything but smoke-inducing: It’s more of the skirt-chasing variety. “I was trying to be funny, be clever as possible,” Wiz told us recently on the set of the video for “Roll Up.” “It’s for the chicks. It’s for guys to sing to chicks. And it’s just a fun song.”

Wiz Khalifa Reacts To Lil Wayne’s ESPN Interview On “Black and Yellow”

On Wednesday morning, HipHopDX joined Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania emcee Wiz Khalifa as he embarked on a promotional tour for his major label debut, Rolling Papers, planned for March 29th on Rostrum/Atlantic Records. Speaking at Philadelphia’s Wire 96.5FM radio station, DX asked Wiz if Lil Wayne’s recent ESPN interview about remaking Khalifa’s “Black and Yellow” was a subliminal response to the rapper’s perceived lyrical jabs in the past at Young Money’s member, Tyga.

“Nah, not at all. I don’t think it had anything to do with that,” said Wiz confidently. However, the DXnext alum did note that Wayne missed an opportunity in the interview that aired days before the Super Bowl to acknowledge a peer “I’ve seen the interview, I think it’s just the case of what a lot of older dudes do now, this is just me being real by saying this, they try to act like they don’t know who I am, or try to act like I don’t know what I’m doing,” Wiz stated. “Because when [ESPN] did the interview with [Lil] Wayne, he was [saying] that he heard the song from the [Pittsburgh] Steelers – he heard it ’cause it was my song, but he didn’t say that. He had an opportunity to step up and say that, and he didn’t.”

Although the Taylor Gang leader acknowledged an opportunity missed – that’s he’s subsequently found from Rap stars like Snoop Dogg and Diddy, he immediately stated that there are no issues there. “I don’t feel any type of way about it, but I recognize it for what it is. It is what it is, but there’s never any problems between me, Wayne or any of his [Young Money] artists, because I’m just so positive. We both have movements and things that we need to tend to, and there would be no point in having tension with each other when we have people who look up to us, that we need to satisfy.”

Snoop Dogg Talks About His Chemistry With Wiz Khalifa

snoop on wiz

Hip Hop legend Snoop Dogg and rising star Wiz Khalifa have more in common than just a love of marijuana. The Long Beach and Pittsburgh natives have gone from mere collaborations to making movies together. “We created a movie called ‘High School,’ created like six songs, and we’re looking forward to dropping that later on this year,” Snoop told MTV.

Snoop can’t take credit for spotting the young talent, it was his son who put his Dad on the Taylor Gang leader. “I never knew him, but my oldest son used to play his music all throughout his house, and I’d be like, ‘Who is this mother—-er he is playing?’ ” Snoop said. “I’ll be going downstairs, and I’d hear it in the bathroom downstairs and then I’d hear it upstairs. I’m like, ‘Man, who is this?’ Then I got hip to him and I started peepin’ him and watching him and listening, and I’m like, ‘Man, this guy is fly.’ ”

The Doggfather will turn 40 this fall while he approaches nearly 20 years in the game. Nearly as many years as the 23 year old Khalifa has been alive. “It’s amazing the way two people are the same kind of people from two different generations, but we’re cut from the same cloth.”
